MarmaJChan got on her bike and was riding at full speed. When she reached a turn, she quickly pressed her brakes as a cat nearly ran into her. She tumbled and fell off her bike but luckily didn’t hurt the cat. The cat stood on the warm pavement and purred.
MarmaJ dusted off her clothes and smiled. The cat looked so cute with her blue eyes that MarmaJ couldn’t get angry. MarmaJ picked up the cat and took her back to the house and gave her milk. Glancing at the clock, she started. She was going to be late for work. MarmaJ looked at the innocent cat purring softly in a sunbeam and knew everything would be fine if she left the cat for half the day.
MarmaJ came back in the evening and saw the cat had wrecked her beloved home. Her pillows were torn and the cat litter was scattered in the room with snack packs torn open here and there. How had the cat gotten the snack packs? MarmaJ would never know. The cat meowed an apology, came up to MarmaJ’s leg and rubbed her soft little head against it. MarmaJ sighed and smiled wryly. She rubbed her temple and called to mind a poem.
“You don’t wreck my home,” she said to the cat as she began to pick up the dirt. She grabbed a broom and swept the whole apartment again preparing a place for the cats to sleep.
“Tomorrow morning, I will ask the neighbors if they know anyone who has a missing cat,” she said, as she gave the cat some wet food and went to bed. At midnight, the cat left the place MarmaJ had prepared for her and hopped up to sleep next to MarmaJ on the bed.
“Aww”, MarmaJ murmured when she felt the cat’s warmth against her skin. The cat rolled her tail across MarmaJ’s neck and slept.
The next morning, MarmaJ placed posters everywhere with the cat’s picture and her house address.
“Little kitty, do you remember your way home?” she asked as she took the cat for a walk. The cat looked sad. She didn’t seem to know the way home. MarmaJ walked all through the corners and alleys, but none of them looked familiar to the kitty. MarmaJ was sad; she was pretty sure that her owner missed her.
Kitty was to stay with MarmaJ much longer than MarmaJ had thought. A week passed and she had no calls for Kitty, and Kitty seemed to enjoy her presence. The neighbors complained that Kitty whined every time MarmaJ went to work or had to leave the house. MarmaJ loved Kitty’s company too. She had been living alone for a long while, and it was nice to have Kitty around. They played with the laser lights and the yarn she bought.
MarmaJ got more worried. She didn’t want to get emotionally attached to Kitty so much that Kitty didn’t want to go home. They spent evenings walking together around the neighborhood, and her neighbors began to love Kitty.
One evening, MarmaJ was taking a stroll with Kitty and a little girl on the other side of the road screamed “Tabitha!” Kitty left MarmaJ’s side and ran to the little girl. The little girl picked her up and gave her a warm hug. MarmaJ smiled sadly. And then walked over to the little girl.
“Hey little girl, is that your cat?” she asked. The little girl looked at her and smiled
“Yes ma’am, I have been searching for her for a week!” she said excitedly. Kitty walked to MarmaJ’s side and swirled between her legs and whined.
“Don’t worry Kitty, you can always visit anytime,” MarmaJ said. The little girl hugged her and MarmaJ gave Tabitha a warm pat on the head.
MarmaJ watched Kitty and the little walk into the sunset.
